The Haunting of the South Creek Post Office

The other day, I was needing to go the post office to mail some invitations. I brought along my son's girlfriend, who was helping me prepare the invitations. It was around 8 at night on a Saturday, so naturally, the place was empty. One man was at the automatic mailing station. As N and I stood waiting our turn, the automatic doors opened and closed. No one was there. We thought nothing of it--a simple glitch.

The man at the kiosk left and we stepped up to take our turn. A minute later, the doors opened and closed again. We looked at each other, eyebrows raised in surprise. Again, no one was there. We finished our purchase and turned to the table to begin affixing the stamps.

We were nearly halfway through when the door opened and closed again. No one there. N and I began stamping faster. A minute later, I looked up when I went to grab another card and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a figure. It was a young woman with long brown hair.

Mind, the doors hadn't let anyone in when it had opened before. And as I watched, she passed between N & the door toward the back of the post office and just...disappeared. I told N and we finished the last invitations. As we stamped the last one, the doors opened and closed again and then they opened to admit a middle-aged woman with short blonde hair. N & I ran out the door, leaving her to her fate.

I'd say we were cowards, but for two facts:

A) She likely wouldn't have believed us if she even understood us (English is not spoken by everyone here).
B) She walked out before N & I got to the car.

Needless to say, I won't be going back to that post office after hours. Unless I want to encounter the ghost. How about you? If you saw something that couldn't be, would you believe it or would you find some other explanation, no matter how far-fetched? If you saw a ghost, would you go back to try to find it again or avoid the situation that led to the sighting?

I'd let the ghost have the post office and NEVER go there after closing again. I'm not one to investigate, especially if I'm the one to have seen the ghost. Great post. It's given me goose bumps.

LOL! I know what you mean. I don't think I want to go back there after hours again. Strange thing is, I've been there after hours before and never had anything odd happen. I wonder if it's because I was with N, who is 15; they say spirits are attracted to the auras of young people. It didn't help that she's terrified of ghosts. Poor kid was nearly crying by the time we left.

*snickers* Oh dear, never come over here ... with other words: yes, I have, I'm living in a house where also is a ghost and this area is pretty much haunted.
Would I go back if I had the choice to do? Yes. And I would try to find out more about this brownhaired woman.

I'm toying with the idea of going back to see if I see her again. Problem is, I can't bring N with me to see if it was her the ghost was attracted to or if we just got lucky (see comment above, where N was so terrified that she was near crying).

The more I think about it, the more I want to find out what's going on--who the brown-haired girl is and why she's haunting a post office. I couldn't see the clothing, as most of the spirit's form was blocked by N, so I don't know if the spirit is from 100 years ago or 10 years ago or what.

I've had many encounters with ghosts, none bad yet, and one run-in with a demon, but those are blog posts for another day. :)

I'm with Alicia. I'm not one to investigate. *shivers*

My imagination would run rampant, but I'd probably ground the explanation in something factual to get rid of the goose bumps. Then I'd let the writer in me take over and craft a tale of a mysterious haunting. Cool post, Lynne!

Thanks, Mae! It does make one wonder, doesn't it? Was she living in Florida when this area first became settled? Is she a lonely spirit, killed by a jealous lover? Who was she?
